Portraits One
"My Family"
8 x 11 inches, watercolor with gouache, 2008
I painted this portrait of my partner Mike and I with our cat Tom and dog Ziggy for Mike's birthday. I got him to pose for the photo I used by telling him an old friend had been in touch after many years and wanted to see a picture of us. Of course getting the animals to sit still was a bit of a nightmare but it all worked out in the
end.
"Lola"
4 x 6 inches, watercolour and gouache, August 2007.
This was a commission from and for my friend Erika.
It's a portrait of her Grandma who had passed away. She asked me to paint her and gave me a selection of photos to work from. I loved one of her saying her Rosary - it seemed to say so much about her, her faith and beliefs and the situation. I placed her in a garden setting with a halo of lilies to symbolise purity and sympathy.
"A Secret (Ashleigh-Michelle)"
ACEO, 2.5 x 3.5 inches, watercolor, August 2007
A portrait of Ashleigh-Michelle, a talented artist and painter. She has a lovely face and I asked if she minded me doing a painting of her from one of her photos. Kindly she agreed.
"Beth"
8 x 10 inches, watercolor, November 2007
My entry for the EBSQ Portait Swap 2007, a watercolor portrait of fellow EBSQ artist Elizabeth Fiedel. I decided to keep the portrait fairly straightforward - to concentrate on likeness and character, as that is what I find the most interesting and challengng part of a portrait (though I enjoyed painting the fabric of Beth's dress too). The background colour was chosen to echo Beth's own paintings.
